Going Places: College, Career, & Technical Education
Career and Technical Program, pursuant to T.C.A. 49-3-104(4), means a non-duplicative sequence of academic and technical content that:
- Incorporates challenge state academic standards

Addresses academic and technical knowledge skills, including employability skills

Is aligned with the needs of industries in the economy of the state, region, or local area

Progresses in specificity, beginning with all aspects of an industry or career cluster and leading to more occupation-specific instruction, including early postsecondary instruction

Has multiple entry and exit points that incorporate credentialing

Culminates in the attainment of a recognized credential

Is established and categorized into one of three levels by the Department, as provided in Rule 0520-12-05-.05, based on additional resources required to support the program and the Wage-Earning Potential for Students participating in the program.
Importance & Purpose
We know that becoming “ready” isn’t exclusive to taking a course or series of courses during high school. GMSD has committed resources at every level, from primary grades through early post-secondary opportunities to ensure that students have exposure to college and career awareness activities.
5th Grade - Biztown
Students are immersed into the workplace, fulfilling a diverse array of jobs and responsibilities while learning about business and financial literacy.
7th Grade Preview Day
Middle school students spend a day at HHS getting hands on experience in areas of interest to help students navigate their course selection and promotion to High School
College & Career Counseling
GMSD has a 6-12 scope and sequence of Career Assessments and Activities through a platform called Naviance.
