Applied Technologies at Houston High School gives students hands-on experience with technical skills and real-world problem solving across a range of high-demand career fields. Through project-based learning and industry-aligned coursework, students explore how technology, design, and precision work together while building skills that translate to both college and career pathways. The program emphasizes practical learning, critical thinking, and career readiness, helping students turn interests into future opportunities.

Advanced STEM Applications

STEM Applications is a program of study designed for students interested in the exciting careers available in the high-demand fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This program of study is uniquely structured to offer students an overview of STEM fields, occupations, and applications in the first course, followed by more specialized study of the scientific inquiry or engineering design process in subsequent courses, culminating in a portfolio and internship experience. Upon completion, students will be prepared to pursue advanced study in the STEM field of their choice at a variety of post-secondary institutions.

Coding

Information Technology (IT) careers involve the design, development, support and management of hardware, software, multimedia and systems integration services. The IT industry is a dynamic and entrepreneurial working environment that has a revolutionary impact on the economy and society. In addition to careers in the IT industry, IT careers are available in every sector of the economy - from Financial Services to Medical Services, Business to Engineering and Environmental Services. Anyone preparing for an IT career should have a solid grounding in math and science.

Horticultural Science

Horticulture Science prepares students for future careers in the management of greenhouse operations, horticulture production, landscape design and maintenance, and turf management. Content covered in includes principles of plant health, growth, reproduction, and biotechnology, principles of hydroponics and aquaponics, greenhouse structures, growing media, site analysis and planning, principles of design, and plant selection and care techniques. Upon completion of these courses, students will be prepared to pursue careers or further study in the horticultural sciences.

Mechatronics

The AI for ALL Minor from the University of Memphis is designed to give students from any academic background a strong foundation in artificial intelligence. The program focuses on AI literacy, practical skills, and real-world applications, helping students understand how AI is used across industries while encouraging ethical and critical thinking. Houston High School offers coursework aligned with the AI for All minor, allowing students to begin exploring artificial intelligence and building college-ready skills while still in high school.
