Clubs

Like building robots or constructing a figure out of cans? Maybe taking the high road and enrolling in a few extra AP Classes? Or Letting your artistic talents shine by drawing a masterpiece? Possibly even developing leadership skills through community involvement?
 
Whatever your nice is, Houston High School has a place for you! Besides academics, we encourage students to engage in an environment where they are challenged to succeed in many facets. Studies show that students who are actively involved in their school and community through extra-curricular activities:

  • Earn admission and scholarships to prestigious universities at higher rates
 
At Houston High School, we understand and value the diversity of a large student body. Even the College Board advises getting involved! Houston High School has countless clubs and activities where all students can participate and grow. The average Houston student is involved in two clubs or activities. Don't worry if you come across more than one that interests you! 
Some clubs meet on A or B days, while others meet before or after school.

The purpose of the Chem Club at Houston High School is to provide students an opportunity to engage in extracurricular, hands-on experiences with peers and underclassmen as science ambassadors outside of and in addition to chemical education in the classroom.

The purpose of FCCLA is to promote personal growth and leadership development through Family and Consumer Sciences education. Focusing on the multiple roles of family member, wage earner, and community leader, members develop skills for life through character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge, and career preparation.

FFA is a dynamic youth organization that changes lives and prepares members for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. FFA develops members’ potential and helps them discover their talent through hands-on experiences, which give members the tools to achieve real-world success. Members are future farmers, chemists, veterinarians, government officials, entrepreneurs, bankers, international business leaders, teachers and premier professionals in many career fields. FFA is an intracurricular student organization for those interested in agriculture and leadership.

The International Club promotes cultural diversity and awareness. Students explore different cultures' traditions, foods, dress and customs.  Every year in the Spring, the International Club organizes and produces the International Extravaganza, a lively celebration of cultures through international dance, music, poetry, fashion, food and more.

The Investment Club would serve as a club where passionate students can discuss economics, finance, and the stock market.  The club is also meant to teach students financial literacy.  The bulk of the club would be a year long competition where members would be paired up and participate in online stock market simulation.  The pair with the most gains from the original investment would win the grand prize.

Houston's Knowledge Bowl team works together to prepare for a Jeopardy-style game focused on a mixture of curriculum-based and everyday life (trivia) questions about science, literature, history, math, geography, music, art and current events.  The Knowledge Bowl team competes in local Quiz Bowl games throughout the year.

The Model United Nations aims to build and maintain strong links between the UN and Model UN participants across the globe. It does that through guides and workshops, which teach students how to make their simulations more accurate; by visiting Model UN conferences and sharing firsthand knowledge of what the actual UN is like; and through encouraging Model UN clubs to take real action to support UN values and the  Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The anime club provides students the opportunity to study the unique art of hand-drawn or computer-generated animation that originates from Japan. Students will learn about Japanese culture through this art form, and they will also be able to connect with students who have similar interests.

The Junior Classical League’s purpose is to encourage an interest in and an appreciation of the language, literature, mythology, and culture of ancient Greece and Rome and to impart an understanding of the debt of our own culture to that of Classical antiquity. Our organization is open to current, future, and former Latin students and all who are interested in the ancient world. We compete and excel in many local, state, and national competitions.

The club is a hub for students across all grade levels to come together and interact in their shared appreciation for math. Along with sharing topics and interests, we also are able to offer any help to those that may not completely understand some concepts presented both in class and outside of it. Before/After School Clubs

The mission of the AP Physics and Calculus Club is to prepare current physics students interested in taking the AP Physics C - Mechanics and AP Physics C - Electricity and Magnetism exams offered by the College Board.

The aviation club aims to teach students about the rules and regulations surrounding air travel and piloting. The goal of this club is also to help instill confidence in students who wish to pursue aviation and give them the tools they need to further their education in this field.

The purpose is to create a competitive badminton club that allows students who enjoy playing the sport to come together and enjoy the game. The club will primarily focus on preparing badminton athletes for competitions, but will welcome anyone who wants to play for leisure. Although it is slightly too late to sign up for competitions this year, the goal will still be to get some people in shape for competitions next year.

The National Technical Honor Society is an educational non-profit that exists to honor, recognize, and empower students and teachers in Career & Technical Education. Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society is the only national organization for high school juniors and seniors that recognizes excellence in the field of Social Studies. Any accredited public or private high school can apply for a local chapter, through which individuals will be inducted into Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society.

The students in the Student Government Association serve as advocates for the student body. By participating in this club, students have the opportunity to help their classmates by helping to create a welcoming environment and receiving feedback from the student body.  Through social media, school dances, pep rallies, spirit week themes, SGA also helps to facilitate events for HHS. The diversity of topics discussed during a TEDx event are so broad that they allow for the cultivation of long conversations about difficult topics, such as mental health, cultural stigmas, societal repression, and more. The purpose is to help students excel on various standardized tests by allowing them to practice, build communication skills, and correct them where they went wrong, which will help raise test scores.

Trapshooting is one of the three major disciplines of competitive clay pigeon shooting.  Students will practice after school two days a week and compete in at least one tournament a month.  The team will also compete in the state tournament and national tournament.
