Student Government & Involvement

  • Our students are very involved on campus and readily support each other in extracurricular activities- Our Mustang Mob student section regularly attends not just football and basketball but even smaller sports like volleyball and soccer. That’s why we earned national recognition for the Best Student Section of the year last year.

  • Student Activities Hub- our Student Government Association, SGA, led by Traci Spain, works hard to build connection and camaraderie within our whole student body through fun spirit weeks and other activities- so even at a big school everyone feels like they have a spot to connect.
  • Students have multiple opportunities to serve the community and are encouraged to do so. This year, in honor of one of our seniors who is fighting cancer at St. Jude, we raised over 11k for Make a Wish in his honor.
  • We have a course specifically geared towards service learning, which teaches students how to plug into the community and connect with local non-profits as they choose their service focuses for their four-year tenure at the school.
  • One of the unique features of Houston is that we have an influx of new students from outside our GMSD feeder programs in the 9th grade. Last year about 25% of our incoming freshmen class were new to the district, whether they came from another district, a K-8 private school, were new to the area, or through an academy. We have a Freshman orientation program in August which helps acclimate everyone to the school and connect students with new friends!

Athletics

Houston is home to some of the most competitive athletic programs in the state of Tennessee. At Houston, student athletes are just that - student first, athletes second. Our coaching staff is trained to teach students to always work to the best of their ability and have a good attitude in the face of adversity or in the light of victory. These Mustangs have a reputation for academic excellence, sportsmanship, determination, and discipline. With 100 state championships across 21 TSSAA sports, Houston has a history of making champions. Many Mustangs go on to pursue their sports at the collegiate or professional level, and Houston is there to support them throughout the entire process.

Fine Arts

At Houston, there is a wide variety of fine arts for students to be a part of. In the theater department, students can explore writing, stage design, dance, directing, and acting. Our visual arts program has provided students with the opportunity to travel and study art across the country and create pieces that live all throughout Germantown and the city of Memphis. Students interested in choir can participate in multiple different sections of choir, including our a cappella group, Fifth Measure. Our orchestra program has traveled all over the world to showcase their unique talents, and they are led by Juilliard graduate Dr. Long Long Kang. The Houston band is known for its tradition of excellence, and they have won multiple awards and program recognitions throughout the state. Houston's fine arts programs are designed to teach responsibility, dedication, and most of all a strong sense of community. Many of our fine arts students will continue their careers at the collegiate and professional level.
