Houston High School Excels at State Championships for Track & Field

Last week the Tennessee Track & Field State Finals were held in Murfreesboro, and the trip was well worth it for the Mustangs. One of our first athletes recognized was recent graduate Cory Young. He finished 3rd in the state for Triple Jump, and he set a new Houston record for the event with 48 feet 1 inch. This was not his only record of the day! At his next event, Young set another new school record with a 23 feet 6 inch Long Jump. With this, he finished third in the state. The day was just getting started for Houston records being broken!

Karlisa Mungen was next to set a new record. In the 100m, she ran an 11.92, and finished fourth overall. She also anchored the 4x100 relay, and along with her teammates Abby Johnson, Takyah Mungen, and Meave Couvillion, set another school record by running a 47.81. They finished State-Runner Up!

Zoe Marsh ran her first event of the day, and she finished runner- up in the 1600m. Up next, she ran the 3200m. Before Marsh’s next event started, Vanderbilt signee Eva Gautreaux ran the 400m. Gautreaux claimed the title of State Champion, running a 55.97, and with that, she earned Houston the 100th State Championship in school history. The celebration for the 100th championship was quickly elevated. Zoe Marsh was set to run the 3200m, and with that, she became a State Champion as well. Houston’s total State Championships went up to 101.

Overall, Houston accomplished 2 State Championships, 4 school records, and had 12 All-State Performers. Congratulations to these student athletes on their accomplishments and hard work this season!
