One of Houston High’s newest additions, Mr. Joseph Murray, has brought more than just a wealth of historical knowledge to the school—he’s brought the spirit of the King of Rock 'n' Roll himself. After making the move from Houston Middle, Mr. Murray has transformed his high school classroom into a mini-Vegas, where history lessons feel more like a night on the Strip.
“It’s like a casino in here,” he jokes, “dark, blinking lights—it’s easy to lose track of time and space!” His students would agree, especially during his signature "Ultimate Review Game." The game—a thrilling test review packed with interactive elements—felt like an Elvis performance, full of energy, engagement, and, yes, a little bit of that ‘Viva Las Vegas’ charm.
Mr. Murray’s love for all things Elvis isn’t just a gimmick—it’s his way of getting students to hit that "history jackpot." His classroom is full of underclassmen that are totally engaged in a lesson– a challenging accomplishment in any high school. His secret? Channeling the King’s showmanship to make every student feel like a headliner in the lesson.
“When you see them all leaning in, completely invested—it’s a feeling like no other,” he said, reflecting on his classroom atmosphere, where it’s clear that he’s found his blue suede groove. His students agree, noting that it’s hard not to get caught up in the fun.
“Somedays, I can’t believe I’m paid to do this,” remarks Murray on the joys of teaching a great lesson. With lights, laughter, and learning, Mr. Murray is turning his history classroom into a hit show, proving that with a little creativity and a dash of Elvis, school can be a whole lot of rock 'n' roll.
