At Houston High School, visual arts students earned 6 gold keys, 6 silver keys, and 5 honorable mentions. Mary Margaret St. Clair and Adele Ferguson also earned the Best in Show and Portfolio Awards–which are the top two senior awards for the region. The gold winning pieces are all on display at the Brooks Museum of Art through February 20th.

The Health Sciences Pathway at Houston High School offers four years of electives for those pursuing careers in the health science field. The pathway offers both internship opportunities and a CMA certification (certified medical assistant) making it possible to find employment directly out of high school.

The Houston High School marching band season just kicked off with band camp, ringing in the new year. The theme for this season is “Unfinished”, pulling inspiration from ideas of loneliness and hope at the end of isolation.

Houston High School won this year’s Battle of the Books competition by defeating Collierville, Arlington and Germantown high schools. The Mustangs had four teams to compete winning first place and tying for second. Each team was responsible for reading and being an expert on six books selected from the Volunteer State Award book list.

Our National Merit Semi-finalists advanced to Finalist status this week. This represents a huge opportunity in scholarship dollars for these young scholars.

Susan Zhang won the Jensen Hughes Fire Prevention Contest through SWEnext.

The Houston Varsity Swim Team recently returned from the State meet in Nashville. This small group competed against 132 other schools coming in 25th holding their own. The girls Medley Relay finished 13th. The boys and girls 4 x 100 free relays placed 14th and 16th respectively. Sophomore Ella Smith finished 9th in the 50 Free. Congratulations to this young team!

On January 29th, the team competed at the Magic City Dance Championship in Birmingham, AL. There they placed First in both the Varsity Hip Hop and Large Varsity Pom categories, and Second in the Varsity Game Day division. They also received the Choreography Award for their Hip Hop routine.

On February 4th & February 5th they competed at the National Dance Team Championship in Orlando, FL. There they moved on to Semi-Finals in Large Varsity Pom for the first time in six years, and then placed 4th in the Nation in the Super Varsity Game Day division - their first time ever competing in that category.

Congratulations to Coach Yorubah Banks, Sponsors Mio Namba and Haley Thomas, and all of the dancers on a very successful season!

The National High School Cheerleading Championship, held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at The Walt Disney World® Resort on February 11-13, 2022, is the pinnacle of cheerleading competitions for high school cheerleaders across the country. All teams invited to compete at the championship qualified at a regional competition in 2021. Teams were credentialed in cheer safety and leadership training, endorsed by the National Federation of High School Sports (NFHS), as well as in the areas of crowd leading, spirit raising, ambassadorship, athleticism, and entertainment.
